Learning to program....with Ruby [Mar. 3rd, 2005|04:15 pm]
Someone asked on #ruby-lang today, "Is [insert book here] a good book to learn programming?". You know what? After you've been programming for several years, it's really impossible to say. I don't know, because I can't put myself in those shoes any more. About the only people who can answer that question honestly are folks who were new (or relatively new) to programming, and learned general programming from the book in question.

While I think "Progamming Ruby, 2nd Ed." is a great book, I don't know how good it is as a "learn to program" type of book. That's not a dig on the book. It's aimed at folks who are new to Ruby, not folks who are new to programming in general.

So, where is a programming newbie to turn if he or she wants to start with Ruby? Here are a couple of links for you:

Learn to Program, by Chris Pine
Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby, by Why the Lucky Stiff

Chris' tutorial is a more traditional tutorial, while Why's guide is, er, different. :)

PS - Chunky Bacon!
